Living and working in Swansea
Swansea is a student city, with relatively affordable housing and cost of living compared to other areas of Wales and the UK in general.
Voted Wales’ best place to live in 2025, the city is known for its dynamic nightlife, relative safety, community spirit and stunning scenery.
The second largest city in Wales, after the capital city of Cardiff, Swansea is home to a smorgasbord of historical, cultural, and leisure attractions.
Set on the majestic Gower Peninsula, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Swansea boasts multiple beaches and bodies of water, including Oxwich Bay, Swansea Beach, and Three Cliffs Bay, perfect for a paddle, ice cream or a swim. Degree apprenticeships in Swansea
Degree apprenticeships are the highest level of UK apprenticeships, enabling students to study for a bachelor’s (Level 6) or master’s (Level 7) with a reputable UK university while working full-time in their chosen field and earning a salary.
Swansea is home to both Swansea University and one of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s campuses. You will find three degree apprenticeship programmes at the former:
- BSc Applied Software Engineering
- BEng in Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering
- BEng in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering
The University of Wales Trinity Saint David provides degree apprenticeships for over 100 employers, including Sony UK Technology Centre, Tata Steel, the Ministry of Defence, LSN Diffusion, Heddlu Police, and Safran.
Industry spotlight
Many of the jobs in Swansea fall under the umbrella of finance and public services, such as administration.
With several branches of government agencies having a presence in the city, there are plenty of opportunities to find work in this area. Swansea Council is a good place to find apprenticeships, such as payroll and pensions, and administrative assistants.
Companies such as DWP Digital and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) offer business and finance-related apprenticeships at various levels.
A retail apprenticeship teaches you valuable transferable skills, such as sales techniques, customer service, stock management, quality control, merchandising, health and safety and proficiency with retail technology and systems.
There is typically clear development in retail, with successful people rising to supervisor, then management status.
Job titles in retail include:
- Sales assistant
- Sales manager
- Visual merchandiser
- Personal shopper
- Cashier
- Customer service representative
Companies such as Savers and Aldi offer retail apprenticeships in the Swansea area.
The NHS and specifically the South Western Ambulance Service are one of the most significant employers in Swansea.
The organisation offers a Paramedic Degree apprenticeship, taking on up to 90 paramedic apprentices each year. There are three routes to applying for this course:
- Level 4 Certificate in Higher Education at the University of Cumbria
- Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD)
- Emergency Care Assistant (ECA) – NB this is an internal SWAST route for our ECAs
What is an apprenticeship?
In the UK, an apprenticeship is a Government-funded initiative combining 80% paid work and 20% classroom or online learning.
Businesses receive financial incentives for taking on an apprentice, and benefit from being able to train staff to suit their company’s specific needs.
Apprentices benefit from earning a living wage, learning on the job and having their tuition paid for.
There are four tiers of UK apprenticeships, as follows:
- Level 2 (Intermediate) – equivalent to 5 GCSE passes
- Level 3 (Advanced) – equivalent to 2 A Level passes
- Levels 4- 5 (Higher) – equivalent to a foundation degree
- Levels 6-7 (Degree) – equivalent to a bachelor’s or master’s degree
The aim is to diversify and upskill the UK workforce, nurturing talents and creating work opportunities in occupations which traditionally have had a narrow scope.
For example, training to be a doctor or a lawyer used to be financially prohibitive to many people, leading to a lack of race, gender and socio-economic inclusion.
Today, there are only three criteria you have to satisfy to be eligible for most UK apprenticeships:
- You must be 16 or older
- You must not be in full-time education
- You must be eligible to live and work in the UK
Be aware that some employers may have their own requirements, be it grades or physical fitness. However, in most cases, there is no maximum age for an apprentice. As such, it is a good option for those wanting to retrain in a new field.

With an apprenticeship, you have a head start in the working world.
While those on a traditional university course may have to work an unrelated, typically minimum wage job to pay for their tuition, you will be working for a company in an industry that you chose.
Being accepted onto an apprenticeship means you will be in paid employment in your chosen occupation, and working towards the qualifications needed to progress to the next stage of your career.
A Steady Salary
One of the main benefits of an apprenticeship is that you are fairly paid for the work you produce, while also having your tuition funded. There are no student loan debts to pay when you graduate, and you are guaranteed to earn a regular wage alongside your colleagues.
All UK apprentices are entitled to at least the minimum living wage for their age group:
- 16-18 – £7.55 an hour
- 18-20 – £10.00 an hour
- 21+ – £12.21
It should be noted that these values are just the minimum salaries. Pay is at your employer’s discretion, so you could earn significantly more.
Higher Number of Apprenticeships
Recent research has shown a 1.3% rise in apprenticeships in the UK for 2024/2025 from 2023/2024.
More apprenticeships across the country means more choice in subject, level and location. It also increases the chances of your application being successful.
Stay Close or Fly Free
Even small rural towns have several apprenticeships available. That means you can choose to stay close to home to work and study, or venture to pastures new, confident that you can find the right apprenticeship for you.
This includes those with additional needs who may need remote work or other measures implemented.
Fastrack Your Goals
UK apprenticeships typically last 12 months to three years, with some of the newer programmes taking just eight months to complete.
This is much shorter than many traditional university courses, which take around three to seven years to complete.
As such, you could earn qualifications from GCSEs and industry-specific grades to bachelor’s and master’s degrees in a much shorter period. Plus, you will already have been working in the field, giving you a head start.
